We live in a world of energetic forces, which although invisible, often affect us more than we realise, physically, mentally and psychically.  Working with energies and becoming more psychically aware can heighten our sensitivity to these forces and disturb our subtle energy fields, so we need to protect ourselves from potentially harmful energies.

Three of the most common causes of such energies come from EMFs, psychic or thought-based confrontation and geopathic stress.  In part 1 of this series of articles, I'm focussing on EMFs.

Electromagnetic Fields

Electromagnetic fields, or EMFs, are invisible forces emitted from the wires which run from power sockets to all our electrical appliances.  Studies of the effects of EMFs on our health often also cover electromagnetic radiation, or EMR, the radio waves used in wireless technology, mobile phones and microwaves.

So far there are few reported cases of extreme reactions to these forces, but as our exposure to EMFs and EMR increases no one can be sure what problems they may cause in the long term.  Prolonged exposure has been shown to cause fatigue, headaches, dizziness, tinnitus, confusion, sleep disturbance and even joint pains.

You may have experienced this yourself - perhaps a hot ear after a long telephone call or a slight headache after sitting in front of a computer screen all day.  Most of us would be lost without our mobile phones and computers, but there are precautions we can take to limit our exposure to the potential dangers:

  • Switch off and unplug all electrical items when not in use.
  • Don't sit too close to the television.
  • Limit the time you spend talking on your mobile phone: use the speakerphone or text instead.  Avoid using it when the signal is low, or in confined metal spaces such as cars, lifts and trains, as this increases the amount of radiation it emits.  Try not to keep your phone switched on when it's in your pocket or close to your body.
  • It's reported to be safer to use your laptop on battery rather than plugged into the mains.  Disable the WiFi function when you don't need it and avoid using it on your lap.
  • When using a desktop computer keep the CPU as far away from you as the wires will allow.  Use a wired rather than wireless mouse, keyboard and printer.
  • If you have a wireless router, keep it as far away from you as you can and switch it off when it's not in use.
  • Cordless phones which connect to a landline also emit radiation, so replace with a wired telephone.
  • If you use a microwave oven (convenient but possibly damaging the food you put in it), keep away from it when it's switched on.
  • Young children are particularly susceptible to the effects of EMFs and EMR.  Wireless baby monitors should be kept at least 1 metre away from the baby's cot.  The low band (35 to 50 MHz) type is preferable which uses analogue frequency modulation rather than DECT, which emits pulses of energy signals.  Avoid allowing young children to play with wireless games consoles.
  • If you can, keep electrical appliances, including televisions, electric alarm clocks and mobile phones, out of your bedroom.  If they're really necessary, keep them away from your bed, preferably by at least 2 metres.  Avoid beds with metal frames and having electrical wires running underneath the bed.  If you need to have your mobile phone next to you at night, don't sleep with it next to your head.

This may seem like too much information, but I believe it's good to be aware of these things and to make up your own mind about them.  Apart from avoiding exposure to EMFs, there are some natural additions we can make to our homes to lessen the potential effects:

Having plants around, especially cacti, maidenhair ferns and peace lilies are believed to absorb electromagnetic energy.  Natural salt also has a cleansing effect on the atmosphere.  Use a rock salt lamp (preferably the type which uses a tea light) or place bowls of sea salt or rock salt in your room.

There are gemstones which may protect against EMFs.  You can keep them near your computer or television (especially Black Tourmaline), wear next to your body as jewellery or carry in your pocket.  These include:
