April Newsletter


 
 

Who would've known when we were seeing in the New Year that our lives would all be turned upside down within three months. These are strange, uncertain times and none of us know what's going to happen from one day to the next.

 

I'd like to start this newsletter by expressing my sincere gratitude to everyone keeping the country going at the moment, from our amazing NHS staff, carers, shop assistants, farmers, delivery drivers, postal workers, (and many more) to the volunteers making sure the elderly and vulnerable receive the food and medication they need.

 

In comparison I have it easy - my partner is working from home and, and as I'm unable to do the same in my 'day job' I am now a furloughed worker - a term I'd never even heard of until a couple of weeks ago. I have a roof over my head, food in the cupboards (and toilet rolls!!), my Beloved for company and plenty of things to do at home. I miss seeing my children and grandchildren and dread my rare outings to the local supermarket. I feel like a naughty child bunking off school as I await my turn in the long queue that snakes around the building. Eventually I wheel my trolley into the shop and begin the search among the partially-empty shelves, joining with the other customers in the new social distancing dance - two steps to the side, stand aside, two steps backwards, avoiding the narrow aisles until vacated by the previous customer. How much more fun it would be if Sainsbury's played music - just imagine dancing around the shop to a laid-back bossa nova? No? Maybe it's just me then!

 

When this strange turn of events first began I had plans to spend more time meditating, practising yoga and finishing all the creative projects I'd started but didn't have time to finish. This is yet to happen as it takes a while to get used to change and uncertainty. So far I've spent many hours cleaning the house, decluttering cupboards and weeding the garden, which I suppose is a way of creating some kind of order out of chaos in my own little world. We're all finding our own ways to deal with these worrying times, so if you're reading this still wearing your pyjamas worrying you should be doing something more productive don't beat yourself up. The important thing is to keep well and stay safe.  

  • Eat as healthily as you can to keep your immunity strong and take some exercise. The occasional day sitting around eating biscuits and watching your favourite box set probably won't do you too much harm but don't let it become a habit. You only have one body (in this lifetime at least!) so take care of it.
  • If you're able to, getting out into nature is always beneficial. The natural world is bursting into life around us - leaves are still unfurling on the trees, birds, bees and butterflies beginning to show themselves, spring flowers are blooming. Life is still going on with a promise of hope for the future. Walk on the damp grass, feel the warm sun on your face, breathe in the fresh air and look up at the stars at night. Of course this is much easier if you have a garden, but a slow walk around any local green space (while conforming to social distancing guidelines) will help you feel connected to nature, especially if you can do it mindfully, taking notice of everything around you.
  • Keep in touch with those you love by text, phone call, Facetime, Skype or letter. If you have children at home, why not get them to draw a picture or story and post it to a relative or friend?
  • Keep up to date with the news but don't get dragged down by it. Personally I find my local BBC radio station helpful - some music, enough general news to keep you informed and a feeling of connection with your local community.
  • Find at least one thing you can look forward to every day.
  • Find something you can be grateful for every day.
  • Notice something beautiful every day.

There are many free online resources available if you're looking for something different. There's PE with Joe (as in Joe Wicks) on YouTube - a favourite of my 10-year-old granddaughter but not just for children. The British Library have some great resources and you can even take a free course on OpenLearn from the Open University.  

I'm taking a short break from making jewellery for a couple of weeks but can still post out parcels to UK addresses for as long as the postal service is still working and there are no further restrictions. I'll still be here sending out Reiki to those in need and I'm always pleased to hear from you.

Amazonite

Sometimes known as the "Hope stone", or the "Stone of Courage", this semi-opaque blue-green gemstone opens and heals both the throat and heart chakras and opens the heart to Universal love. It also opens the third eye chakra which increases intuition, and aligns the physical body with the etheric and astral bodies.

The soothing energy of Amazonite calms the mind, relieves stress, helps to overcome fears and worries, and restores emotional balance after traumatic incidents.  It calms feelings of anger or irritation and enhances loving communication by enabling you to see both sides of a situation.

Amazonite helps you to solve your problems by combining logical thought with intuition.  It also inspires creativity, and its ability to promote communication and personal expression makes it a useful gemstone for public speakers and artists.  

In the 21st century we're constantly being subjected to disturbing electro-magnetic frequencies (EMF) that affect our body's energy systems, especially if using mobile phones and computers for prolonged periods of time. Amazonite provides protection against Electro-magnetic energies by filtering out irritating or negative energy.  

Amazonite encourages you to take control of your own life and make your own decisions, and fosters independence and self-reliance.  It may also increase clairvoyant and telepathic abilities.

Physically, Amazonite is beneficial for disorders of the nervous system.  It also balances calcium levels in the body, strengthens teeth and bones and relieves muscular spasms.  It can be useful for treating osteoporosis or tooth decay.

Grapefruit essential oil

Citrus paradisi

Grapefruit essential oil is cold-pressed from Grapefruit peel, giving it a light, refreshing, citrus fragrance. Many citrus oils can cause photosensitisation of the skin, however this is less likely with Grapefruit oil. Although it contains Furocoumarins, the chemicals which can react on the skin when exposed to sunlight, it also contains other compounds which help to counteract these effects.

Grapefruit is mainly used for its anti-depressant properties. It is an uplifting and energising oil which helps to stabilise the emotions, restore motivation and boost confidence. This can help in cases of Seasonal Affective Disorder and during times of stress. If you're feeling lethargic, or your get-up-and-go has got up and gone, try adding a few drops of Grapefruit essential oil to a diffuser for an energy boost.

This oil stimulates the lymphatic system and speeds up the elimination of toxins from the body. When used in a massage blend after exercise it aids in the removal of lactic acid (created by the muscles during exercise) which helps to prevent muscle stiffness, aches and pains.

It has a tonic effect on the skin and scalp, which can help to balance oily skin and acne. Grapefruit can also relieve headaches and migraines and restore balance after ear infections.

As with all citrus oils, Grapefruit should be kept in a cool, dark place and used within six months. However, they can still be used to fragrance a room after this time, even if some of their therapeutic properties be reduced. Birthday Gemstones

Every gemstone and crystal is governed by planetary forces, and wearing one corresponding with your astrological birth chart is believed to strengthen these celestial energies.

Diamond is the main gemstone for April which includes the birthdays of those born under the sign of Aries (21st March-April 19th) and Taurus (20th April-May 20th).
