May Newsletter

Hello everyone and welcome to the May Newsletter! As I write this the sun-soaked warmth of Easter seems to have been replaced by a keen easterly wind! Never mind, the gardeners among us know that leaves are returning to the trees, where there were buds, now flowers peep out, and what was once a lifeless brown is growing greener as lawns come back to life. In short, Summer is on its way!

Now is a good time to relax and let your mind wander where it will. It's surprising the good ideas that can come your way when you 'switch off' for a moment. As a Reiki Master, I've long used this to help me meditate, but music can help too, as can mindfulness. However you choose to relax, why not try to take a few moments for yourself in May? You're bound to feel better for it and, besides, who knows where it will take you?

love, light and blessings

Sodalite is a beautiful deep royal blue colour and usually contains white or greyish coloured inclusions of Calcite. Although first discovered and recorded in 1806 in Greenland, it became more popular in the UK in 1891 after large deposits of the gemstone were found in Bancroft, Ontario.

Sodalite stimulates and balances the throat and third eye chakras, encouraging intuition, rational thought and creative ideas. It improves truthful verbal communication by uniting logic with intuition making it a useful stone to wear to make yourself understood. Used during meditation or creative visualisation it helps to calm and focus the mind.

Sodalite increases self-awareness, and helps you to stand up for yourself, speak your truth, and stay true to your beliefs. It enables you to understand and accept who you are without feelings of guilt or inadequacy and strengthens the desire for freedom from anything holding you back from being your authentic self.

This calming gemstone balances the emotions, releases fears and phobias and relieves panic attacks. It is an empowering crystal for women of all ages, especially those going through major life changes such as the menopause. Placing a large piece of Sodalite in your bedroom can also be helpful for insomnia as it encourages restful sleep and protects against electromagnetic pollution.

It is a very useful stone for group work, encouraging solidarity, harmony, a sense of purpose and trust in others.

On a physical level, Sodalite helps to heal disorders of the ears, sinuses, throat, vocal chords, larynx and thyroid. It strengthens the immune system, relieves inflammation, reduces high blood pressure and balances blood sugar levels. It can also be beneficial for disorders relating to calcium imbalances in the body.

Mentha piperita

Peppermint essential oil has a fresh, sharp, menthol fragrance and is excellent for clearing the head and improving concentration. One or two drops vapourised in an oil burner or diffuser can help ease headaches and relieve the symptoms of stuffy head colds and sinus congestion.

Used in a hypoallergenic base lotion, it cools the skin, reducing redness and calming irritation and itchiness. It can also be added to a footbath to refresh tired and aching feet.

Digestive problems and period pains can be helped by massaging the abdomen with Peppermint oil diluted in a carrier oil. Add 1-2 drops to 10ml of any light carrier oil, such as Grapeseed or Sweet Almond, mix well, and massage the abdomen gently in clockwise circular movements.

On a subtle level, Peppermint encourages self-acceptance, concentration and vitality. It also helps to overcome feelings of inferiority.

Peppermint is a powerful oil so should be used sparingly. It should not be used during pregnancy or on young children and may be best avoided if taking homeopathic medicine. For more information on the safe use of essential oils at home, please see my Basic Aromatherapy page.

Birthday Gemstones

Every gemstone and crystal is governed by planetary forces, and wearing one corresponding with your astrological birth chart is believed to strengthen these celestial energies.

Emerald is the traditional gemstone for May which includes the birthdays of those born under the signs of Taurus (20th April-20th May) and Gemini (21st May-20th June). Both of these astrological signs also resonate with the energy vibrations of Aquamarine, Sapphire, Tourmaline, Tiger's Eye and Topaz. Other beneficial gemstones include Azurite, Diamond, Kyanite, Kunzite, Lapis Lazuli, Malachite, Rose Quartz, Rhodonite and Selenite for Taureans, and Agate, Apatite, Calcite, Chrysocolla, Chrysoprase and Citrine for those born under the sign of Gemini.

Music of the Month

Deva Premal sings the Moola Mantra

You can't have enough Deva Premal:  I knew it before I saw her live in Bath a few years ago, I knew it even more afterwards. This album features the Moola Mantra, which was inspired by the vision of avatars Sri Bhagavan and Sri Amma, and is a prayer of oneness - something which seems all the more relevant, and needed, in these turbulent times. The Mantra is said to bring comfort, peace and joy to many people all over the world. It certainly has to me, which is why Deva's pure voice singing these soothing incantations hasn't been off my CD player since I received it. If you'd like to let this calming, meditative music wash over you too, why not follow the link and have a listen?
