Welcome to the February Newsletter!  New this month: Turquoise gemstones; Petitgrain essential oil; book of the month and birthday gemstones.

With February being the month we celebrate St Valentine's Day, what better time to think about love - not just romantic love, but love in all its forms. With so much political unrest, hatred, fear and inequality about, the more love, compassion and understanding we can bring into the world the better!

It doesn't have to mean major gestures of undying love and devotion - sometimes the smallest act of kindness can make a huge difference to someone's day:  taking the time to really listen to a friend when they need to talk; calling in to check on your elderly neighbour to see if they're OK; giving your partner a shoulder massage when they've had the day from hell.

When it comes to Valentine's gifts, often it's your presence - your undivided attention without the distraction of television or mobile phones - that can be  more welcome than the present. That said, if you're looking for a small token of appreciation for someone you love (or yourself) I have a wide selection of jewellery and gifts made with love and positive vibes!

Don't forget that being a kind and loving person also means being kind and loving to yourself, so make sure you save some time and energy for your own needs!

Love, light and blessings

Many different cultures, including the Mayans, Ancient Egyptians, Chinese and Native Americans have used this gemstone both for adornment and for its metaphysical qualities. The Ancient Egyptians made great use of this gemstone, with mines of Turquoise being quarried in Sinai as long ago as 3000 BC. The Ancient Egyptian Goddess Hathor was known as 'The Mistress of Turquoise' and the patron Goddess of miners. As a Goddess of music, dance, fertility and childbirth, she personifies the principles of love, motherhood and joy.

The Native Americans hold this gemstone in high esteem as a giver of strength, protection, psychic sensitivity and connection to the spirit world. There is an ancient legend that they danced and rejoiced when the rains came. Their tears of joy mixed with the rain and seeped into Mother Earth to become SkyStone - known to us as Turquoise.

This beautiful gemstone comes in a variety of colours ranging from pale blue to greenish-blue. The blue colour comes from its copper content and the green from traces of iron. Sometimes part of the supporting, or mother rock is visible on Turquoise gemstones as strands of brown or black veining. Being a fragile and porous gemstone, Turquoise is sometimes stabilised to increase its hardness, helping it to keep its colour and be more resistant to scratching and damage.

Although mainly associated with the throat chakra, this crystal balances and aligns all the chakras and raises the vibration of the entire subtle energy system. As a stone of purification and protection, it helps to disperse and protect against negative energies, including harmful thoughts directed at you by other people or those created by electrical equipment.

During meditation or Spiritual/Heallng work, Turquoise has a grounding and protective energy while also providing a connection with the world of spirit. It can be useful during astral travel, vision quests or past life healing, giving insight into your current situation and an understanding of your spiritual path.

Turquoise helps you to communicate more clearly and effectively, whether this is broaching a difficult subject with loved ones, writing, or speaking in public. It helps to calm any nerves and enables you to get your views across truthfully and honestly. It also enhances creative expression, promotes leadership and heightens intuition.

The calming and balancing energy of this soothing crystal instils inner peace and helps stabilise mood swings. It inspires romance and spontaneity within relationships. Turquoise is also a symbol of friendship, and there is a belief that if you're given this gemstone by a loving friend, it will protect you from negative energy and bring good fortune.

On a physical level, Turquoise is a general all-round healer. It helps to detoxify the body, reduce inflammation and fight off viruses. It can also be used to aid eye problems, headaches, migraines and disorders of the inner ear. Its ability to reduce excess acid in the body can be helpful for rheumatism, gout and arthritis.

Citrus aurantium

Petitgrain essential oil is steam-distilled from the leaves and young shoots of the bitter orange tree, the tree which also gives us Neroli (stream-distilled from the blossoms) and Bitter Orange (expressed from the peel of the fruit). The fragrance of Petitgrain is light, fresh and woody with slight floral undertones. The oil is energising, refreshing, uplifting but also relaxing.

Petitgrain has a mildly stimulating effect on the immune system which strengthens general resistance to illness, and it helps to restore energy levels during convalescense. Its ability to calm and relax muscular cramps can relieve digestive problems such as colic, indigestion, nausea and diarrhoea. Petitgrain is also beneficial for headaches, migraines, hay fever and fluid retention.

In skin care, Petitgrain essential oil helps to balance, clear and tone the skin and is particularly good for greasy skin. It has powerful antiseptic properties and helps to balance the production of sebum, helping to clear up blemishes, pimples and acne. When used on the scalp, it may also be beneficial for treating dandruff.

Petitgrain has relaxing and antidepressant qualities, making it a valuable oil to treat stress, anxiety, nervous exhaustion and depression. Its mildly sedative properties can be used to treat insomnia, especially if lack of sleep is caused by sadness or apathy rather than anxiety or worry. Its balancing effect on the emotions can help to restore self-confidence, self-belief and inner strength.

Petitgrain has an affinity with the throat chakra. It blends well with Lavender which can increase its calming effects, or with Rosemary to enhance its energising and revitalising benefits.

Although a generally safe oil, it should not be used undiluted on the skin. For more information on the safe use of essential oils, please see my Basic Aromatherapy page.

Birthday Gemstones

Every gemstone and crystal is governed by planetary forces, and wearing one corresponding  with your astrological birth chart is believed to strengthen these celestial energies.

Amethyst is the traditional gemstone for February, which includes the birthdays of those born under the signs of Aquarius (20th January-18th February) and Pisces (19th February-20th March). Both of these astrological signs also resonate with the energy vibrations of Aquamarine, Chrysoprase, Fluorite, Labradorite and Moonstone. Other beneficial gemstones include Amber and Angelite for Aquarians, and Bloodstone, Blue Lace Agate, Calcite, Sunstone and Turquoise for those born under the sign of Pisces.
