It may be time to stow away those summer clothes, but there's no need to shut yourself away! If we're lucky we may get a few bright, sunny, reasonably warm days before the onset of winter. It's a great time to get out and about and visit places you've never been to before, or revisit a few favourite places now they're not so busy. 31st October - Halloween, Samhain, All Hallow's Eve

It may seem Halloween has become increasingly commercialised, but there are many old traditions which are still celebrated today. In the Celtic tradition, this is the end of summer and the beginning of a new year. It heralds the beginning of the dark winter months: a time when the last of the harvest was gathered in and the animals brought in from the fields. Ceremonial bonfires were lit, with embers taken back to each home to re-light the hearth fires and protect each home from bad spirits.

The newer custom of 'trick-or-treating' is believed to have it's roots in the early All Souls' Day parades in England. During the festivities, poor citizens would beg for food and families would give them pastries known as 'soul cakes' in return for their promise to pay for the family's dead relatives.

Traditionally it's a time to remember our ancestors and loved ones who have passed over: to light a candle of remembrance and give thanks for the joy they brought into our lives.

"As we enter the darkness of winter this evening, let us remember our own ancestors with love, with a prayer that all unquiet souls be led to blessedness and peace, with a hope that this sacred festival may be restored to its former respect as a time of communal honouring."

Caitlin Matthews - from "The Celtic Spirit - Daily Meditations for the Turning Year"

Sending you love, light and Autumn Blessings!

Rose Quartz heals and balances the heart chakra. It opens the heart to Universal and unconditional love and helps us learn how to love ourselves. This beautiful pink gemstone helps you forgive yourself and others for past mistakes, by teaching compassion, kindness and tolerance. It also raises self-esteem self-worth.

The calming, supportive energy of Rose Quartz restores peace during difficult times. It is one of the most beneficial crystals for healing emotional pain caused by a lack of love in the past or after losing a loved one. Its loving energy gives support and comfort during the grieving process, reminding you to take care of your own needs and helping you release unexpressed emotions.

Wearing Rose Quartz, or keeping this gemstone near you, is believed to attract love and romance. It restores harmony and trust in existing relationships, leading to deeper commitment and understanding. Rose Quartz has a gentle energy and can benefit anyone who needs more love in their life.

Rose Quartz can also increase the power of positive affirmations. Hold your crystal while you state your affirmation and carry it with you during the day to remind you of your intentions.

On a physical level, Rose Quartz is believed to ease difficult menstrual and menopausal symptoms and encourage fertility. When placed or worn near the heart chakra it can stimulate blood circulation and strengthen the heart. It may also be useful for vertigo.

Myrtle Essential Oil

Myrtus communis

Myrtle is a small evergreen plant with small, glossy blue-green leaves, white flowers and black berries. It grows wild in countries surrounding the Mediterranean and the essential oil is distilled from the twigs and aromatic leaves. It belongs to the Myrtaceae plant family which includes the more familiar Eucalptus, Tea Tree and Cajuput. It shares many of the properties of these oils, however it has a softer, slightly sweeter fragrance, a more gentle action, and is sedative rather than stimulating.

Its main uses are for treating bronchitis, sinusitis, hay fever, catarrh, coughs and colds. Being a sedative oil it's ideal to use in a diffuser at night to ease breathing and encourage a good night's sleep. Myrtle has expectorant properties and a steam inhalation with 2 or 3 drops of oil added can help clear blocked sinuses.

It is a natural antiseptic and kills bacteria and its gentle action makes it suitable for use by children and the elderly. In skin care, Myrtle is mainly used to balance oily skin and may help clear acne.

On a subtle energy level, Myrtle helps you let go of preconceived ideas. This uplifting essential oil brings comfort, harmony and acceptance. It can also be used to help deal with issues regarding guilt and forgiveness.

Myrtle is generally non-irritant and non-sensitising, however, essential oils are powerful! Take a look at my Basic Aromatherapy page for more information.

Birthday Gemstones

Every gemstone and crystal is governed by planetary forces, and wearing one corresponding with your astrological birth chart is believed to strengthen these celestial energies.

Opal and Tourmaline are the traditional gemstones for October, which includes the birthdays of those born under the signs of Libra (23rd September-22nd October) and Scorpio (23rd October-21st November). Both of these astrological signs also resonate with the energy vibrations of Aquamarine, Emerald, Kunzite and Moonstone. Other beneficial gemstones include Aventurine, Bloodstone, Jade, Lapis Lazuli, Lepidolite, Peridot, Sapphire and Sunstone for Librans, and Apache Tear, Charoite, Garnet, Malachite, Rhodochrosite, Ruby and Turquoise for those born under the sign of Scorpio.

Book of the Month

The Complete Guide to Crystal Chakra Healing by Philip Permutt

This book is a great introduction to Crystal Healing or a handy addition to the bookshelves of anyone interested in crystals and chakras. It begins with a description of the chakras and subtle energy systems, suggestions on how to select and cleanse your crystals, and how to make crystal elixirs. The main body of the book concentrates on using crystals to heal the chakras.

It covers a basic range of crystals, most of which are easily available and some more rare, with colour photographs and descriptions of their healing energies. The author then goes on to explain other ways of working with crystals, including how to create a healing space, give crystal healing to others, send distant healing and use crystals for self-healing. He also covers using crystals for divination and meditation. Throughout the book there are practical exercises to experience crystal energies. Philip Permutt also shares some of his own case studies from working as a Crystal Healer.
